The certain authority of the EPA to regulate carbon and other harmful pollutants crumbles with SCOTUS ruling

U.S. Supreme Court decision signals seriously failed climate leadership to the rest of the world.

by | Jun 30, 2022 | NEWS & PRESS

June 30, 2022 – This week’s Supreme Court ruling striking down the authority of the EPA to regulate climate pollution is a huge blow to our country’s fight to slow climate change. With power-plant emissions from U.S.-based power plants being a key driver in the climate crisis, this disastrous decision signals seriously failed climate leadership to the rest of the world. This SCOTUS position endangers individuals, communities, our economic progress, and our public health and safety.

The federal case of West Virginia v. the EPA involves several other states and coal companies who challenged EPA’s authority to regulate power plant emissions, and Congress must act now to fight back. Join 247Solar in demanding that Congress pass immediate legislation to support federal clean energy investments. Clean energy investments reap quantitative benefits across our economies: reduced energy costs for consumers and businesses, secure and good-paying jobs, better air quality, cleaner water, and secure access to reliable, clean energy. This commitment touches every corner of all lives.

“This is a huge retreat from our country’s climate leadership,” stated Bruce Anderson, 247Solar Founder & CEO. “While hundreds and thousands of corporations, individuals, communities, and political leaders are making impressive changes to combat rising temperatures and address the energy crisis, this SCOTUS decision spits in the face of people working hard every day to keep this world a place we can continue call home.

“In all industries, automobile – even oil, and gas – I can think of countless leaders, policy-makers, and colleagues who are taking us forward. So many are working to transition to a clean energy space for effective and lasting change. But the truth is we don’t want to do this alone. We need swift action from every leader, and I’m deeply disappointed about the message this ruling sends not just to our US-based citizens, but to our fellow humanitarians everywhere.”

For decades, we have depended on the certain and strong authority of the EPA to regulate carbon and other harmful pollutants. The EPA “protects people and the environment from significant health risks, sponsors and conducts research, and develops and enforces environmental regulations.” Carbon reducing commitments have also come from loud corporate voices, and Congressional action can support and aid this effort. We need Congress to carry the conversation forward and continue the positive impacts of climate reversal. This climate change work improves local and global economies, supports public health and safety, reduces costs across all sectors, builds strong jobs, and mitigates the increasing climate disasters we see every day.
